5 Basic Cocktails for Home Entertaining
The cocktails you drink can be seasonally based on what the crowd likes and dislikes at a given point. While there may be some new drinks coming up, there are some that just never go out of fashion and remain a classic in most drinks menus out there. Here is a list of those five basic cocktails that you can enjoy any time and even make at home without much hassle:
1. The Tom Collins
This is one classic drink that is built on ice and served in a tall glass specifically known as the Collins glass. The flavor is sweet and bubbly and built on gin. All that you need additionally is a simple sugar syrup that you can make at home with equal parts sugar and water, soda water, and juice of half a lemon. Just shake in the ingredients: gin, ½ lemon juice, and ½ oz of sugar syrup together and you can drain it into the Collins glass. Finish it with a top-up of soda water, and just garnish with an orange or cherry.
2. The Moscow Mule
This is one name that never gets old, and even if you may not have tried it personally, you would have come across this at someplace or the other. This is a drink you would have seen served in copper mugs and the very sight of it stands out from the rest of the other glass served drinks on the table. All you need to do is use 1.5 oz vodka, with 4oz of ginger beer, and a squeeze of lemon juice. The lemon reacts with the copper and adds that extra flavor to your drink.
3. The Bloody Mary
This is one cocktail you cannot miss, and it’s a definite hit when you want a simple cocktail on any occasion, be it a special evening or a lazy at-home party. This is known as the vodka classic and just can’t go out of flavor. All you need is 1.5 oz vodka to be combined with 3 oz of tomato juice and ½ oz of lemon juice. You can add in about 3 dashes of Worcestershire sauce and 1 dash of tabasco. Finally, add in a sprinkle of celery salt and pepper, and finish with a celery garnish.
4. The Margarita
While the origin stories of the drink are still being debated upon, this is an easy-to-make drink when mixed in the right proportions. Although quite a few variations for margaritas exist, the original can never go out of fashion. All you need to do is start with wetting the rim of the glass by gently rubbing a lemon slice, and then roll the brim in salt. You need to shake 1.25 oz of tequila with 2/3 oz of Cointreau triple sec along with ½ oz of lime juice in a shaker filled with ice. Your drink is ready to be served in the prepared glass.
