For those who are unaware of ulcerative colitis, it is a chronic condition that causes inflammation   of the colon (large intestine) and the rectum, located on the inner lining of the large intestine.   It is widely considered to be an autoimmune disease. However, please note that it is not to be confused with Crohn’s disease and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

1. Rectal bleeding

2. Carbonated beverages
Carbonated beverages cause irritation in the digestive tract, which ultimately leads to increasing gas levels. Since they contain caffeine, sugar, or artificial sweeteners, they have the possibility to trigger the symptoms of ulcerative colitis.

3. Foods that include sulfur or sulfate
Such types of foods always create an excess of gas production. Bread, peanuts, beer, wine, certain juices, cheese, eggs, almonds, pasta, red meat, and certain other supplements all contain sulfate, which could trigger ulcerative colitis.

4. Popcorn
Popcorn is another item, which has high fiber content. It is considered a heavy food item that does not get adequately digested by the small intestine. Hence, the consumption of popcorn could cause diarrhea.

5. Chocolates
This one will hurt the sentiments of chocolate lovers. Chocolate is known to include sugar and caffeine, the two main ingredients that upset the digestive tract. Overconsumption of chocolates can lead to cramps. Therefore, those who have ulcerative colitis must stay away from chocolates.
